Choosing a plank or butcher block kitchen island top involves three decisions: the top option, the wood material, and the finish. On the VMW Monastery and Lyndon listings, the standard plank top is 1.5 inches thick, while the standard and Premium Oak butcher block options are 2 inches thick.
This guide compares the listed VMW top options and ordering choices. Your selection needs to work with the island design, the way you use the surface, and the finish you want in your kitchen.
Vintage Mill Werks handcrafts made-to-order solid wood furniture in Southern California. When browsing our kitchen islands, begin with a design that suits your storage and room needs, then compare its available top choices.
Compare the listed top options
The current Monastery Kitchen Island and Lyndon Kitchen Island listings offer the following choices. Use the individual product page to confirm the options for the island you are considering.
| Listed top option | Thickness on these designs | Main decision |
|---|---|---|
| Standard Plank | 1.5 inches | Standard plank option; included on the Monastery. |
| Standard Butcher Block | 2 inches | Thicker butcher-block option; review the selected design’s material details. |
| Premium Oak Butcher Block | 2 inches | Oak butcher-block top; the upgrade applies to the top only. |
Choose plank if you prefer the thinner 1.5-inch profile. Compare the 2-inch butcher block choices when you want a thicker profile. Choose Premium Oak when Oak itself or an Oak-specific stain is part of your plan.
The Monastery includes its standard plank top, with butcher block choices offered as upgrades. Check each design's current selections and pricing rather than treating one listing as the rule for every island.
As you compare VMW kitchen island designs, keep the top choice connected to the complete piece. Its thickness, footprint, finish, and relationship to the base all contribute to the result. The half-inch difference describes thickness; it does not add length or depth to the work surface.
Keep top type, material, and finish separate
The top option identifies the listed style. The material choice tells you whether you are choosing the standard option or the Premium Oak upgrade. The finish determines the selected color and appearance on that material.
These decisions work together, but one does not replace the others. Choosing a finish does not select an Oak top, and choosing Oak does not complete the finish decision.
On the current Monastery and Lyndon listings, the standard paint and finish selections are also available on Oak, along with additional Oak-specific stains. Colors marked OAK ONLY require the Premium Oak top option. Confirm the intended finish for the top and base separately when planning a combination. For painted areas, specify Solid or Weathered in Special Instructions, including the color and the component it applies to.
Review our current furniture finishes alongside the product's selections. If you are comparing two photographs, identify both the top option and the finish before using them as a reference.
Understand what the Oak upgrade includes
The Premium Oak Butcher Block selection upgrades the top. It does not convert the entire island to Oak.
If you want complete Oak construction, including the top, base, and internal framing, email info@vintagemillwerks.com for a separate quote. Include the VMW island design and the dimensions you are considering so our team can review the complete request.
Deciding this early helps you compare the configurations you actually want. A top-only upgrade and a complete Oak island are different requests, even if your preferred finish is similar.
Look at the complete island before choosing the profile
A top detail photograph helps show its appearance, while a full view shows how it relates to the base. Compare the thickness with the doors, drawers, legs, and shelving below it. Consider how the top and base finishes work with your nearby cabinetry and flooring.
Start with labeled examples. A photograph alone does not confirm which top option was ordered or how it was constructed. Ask us for clarification when you like a reference but do not know its specifications.
Our customer reviews and furniture photos show VMW furniture in customers' homes. Use them to explore proportions and color combinations, then confirm the selected design and top on the product page.
Solid wood brings individual grain, knots, and board characteristics to the finished surface. Lighting and screens also influence what you see. Look for an overall appearance you enjoy while allowing for natural differences in the piece made for you.
Plan around the way you use the surface
List the tasks and objects the island needs to accommodate. You may want room for serving dishes, a coffee setup, ingredients, or everyday items that move on and off the surface. Compare the overall top dimensions with those needs.
Think about the surface with the objects in place. An appliance, tray, or cutting board occupies more than the small area suggested by its name. Include handles, cords, and the space needed to use or move it.
If the island includes seating in your plan, confirm the available overhang, framing, and space for the intended chairs or stools. Top thickness alone does not establish seating clearance.
Also confirm the overall finished island height for your chosen configuration. Changing from a 1.5-inch to a 2-inch top does not tell you, by itself, what the finished height will be. Ask for that dimension rather than automatically adding half an inch to another configuration's height.
Care for the finish you select
Choose the care routine for the actual finish on your top. A butcher-block label is not a reason to follow generic oiling advice: our waxed-furniture instructions specifically say to avoid mineral oil. Check which instructions apply before using a cleaner, wax, or other treatment.
Our furniture care instructions distinguish waxed from sealed or lacquered surfaces. Use a soft dry or slightly damp cloth as directed, and protect the surface from hot items with appropriate trivets or placemats. Email us if you need help identifying the care directions for your order.
Confirm the choices before placing the order
Keep a short record of the island design, overall dimensions, top option, wood choice, and finish for each part. This makes it easier to compare alternatives without mixing the specifications from different photographs or listings.
For requests beyond the listed options, begin with a VMW design and use our furniture customization process before ordering. Explain what you want to change and why. Our team will review feasibility for that particular design.
Our ordering FAQs provide additional information for planning the purchase.
Questions about plank and butcher block island tops
Are Standard Butcher Block and Premium Oak Butcher Block the same choice?
No. Both are listed as 2 inches thick on the two designs compared here, but Premium Oak specifies the Oak material upgrade. Confirm the top option and finish separately on your selected island.
Does choosing the Oak top make the base Oak too?
No. The dropdown upgrade is for the top only. Complete Oak construction, including the base and internal framing, requires a separate email quote before ordering.
Should I cut food directly on a butcher block island top?
If cutting food is part of your routine, plan to use a separate cutting board. The top's name alone does not establish how its finished surface should be used. Follow the care directions for your selected finish, and ask us if you are unsure which directions apply.
